meet shwe our sweatshirted boat guide
takes us to the river’s edge
loads us in a long boat
all three
erica
dad &
me
boatman cranks the engine up
fires her & we’re off
up river
under blaze of myanmar sun
folds of flowers
either side
women washing laundry
oxen along the shore
a gaggle of houses
some concrete
some wooden
some up on stilts & lashed
we leave the wharf of boats &
head into the climbing sun
chicken farms
monasteries
old sky-king palaces
w/ their sky-kings lost to time
truckstops along the roadway above
rapids rippling over
trash in the reeds
corn husks & longyi-s
drying upon the rocks
farmhouses
farmers
fields tilled & planted
corn
oranges
rice
mangoes
sundries
giant cotton trees
frocked with orange bulbs
& clusters of ant houses
leaves past wet season dry &
bronze under burmese winter
hill upon hill
all green and flowing
climbing towards blue haze of mountain sky
shan plateau rising towards thailand &
china beyond
the river flows down
through it all
the houses & banners &
farms rise up beside
riverside shan village
a cluster of boats
white pagodas hidden high in the canopy

we dock at the confluence
two rivers join
with explosion of rapid
rocks & scree
take tea up above
on bamboo veranda
in the shade of huge banyan tree
backed by an open air
riverside cafe/store/noodle shop
shan woman cooks up soups &
sells cans of soda
with her husband behind
in the fields
sowing seeds

the water pass by
the sky overhead
flowers in the farm rows
oxen in the fields
burma a legend
a forest
a dream
